Subjectivity in English and Vietnamese commentaries - an appraisal contrastive analysis
Abstract
T his paper uses Appraisal framework to identify Attitude and Engagement resources in a selection of texts in order to reveal the level of “subjectivity” in commentaries about political events taken from two online newspapers: The New York Times and Tuoi Tre. The results show that although there are some differences in the frequency and the linguistic features of these resources, the genre in the two languages shares a variety of similarities in their subjectivity level.
