Abstract

The paper presents the results of the photoluminescence and thermoluminescence behaviour of Mn 2+ -doped Zn 2 SiO 4 powder synthesized by high – energy planetary ball milling technique followed by calcination in air at 1250°C. The obtained phosphor was characterized using powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence (PL) and thermo- luminescence (TL) techniques. The PL spectrum illustrates the emission centered at 525 nm corresponds to the 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 ( 6 S) transition of Mn 2+ in the host Zn 2 SiO 4 crystal. The photoluminescence excitation spectra present six excitation bands peaking at 270 nm, 356 nm, 377 nm, 420 nm, 432 nm and 470 nm, respectively, in which the strongest absorption belongs to 420 nm wave length showing potential application of the prepared phosphor in white-light-emitting diode as a blue-to-green color conversion phosphor.
