A survey of chemical composition and antimicrobial effect of the essential oil obtained from the Scimum Sanctum L. plants grown in Binh Dinh
Abstract
The essential oils from the Ocimum sanctum L. grown in Binh Dinh was obtained by water-distilled method, accounting for 0.61%. The chemical composition of the essential oils was analyzed by GC-MS method. The dominant compounds in the essential oils were eugenol (71.21%), β-caryophyllene (12.96%) and cis-β-elemene (9.67%). The main component in the essential oils was eugenol. This essential oils has strong inhibitory activity against the growth of Lactobacillus fermentum and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, it also inhibits the development of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonasa eruginosa .
