The structure of poetic language and melody in Dinh Hung’s poems

Abstract

The article is concerned with Dinh Hung, one of the Vietnamese poets strongly influenced by Western symbolism. In the process of Tho moi, Dinh Hung’s poems show the breath of freshness, and mystery. The poems are quite different from those of other poets and exceed the reception of readers as well as professionals at the time. Recently, Dinh Hung’s writings have attracted attention and been regarded as poems of innovation. The article examines the innovativeness of Dinh Hung’s poems in the aspect of poetic language and melody. Dinh Hung prefers the kind of poetry containing profound emotion, originating in the deep spirit and unconscious. He reproduces poetic language to give it a new lease of life and he brings music to poetry to make it a marvellous harmony. All these things make his poems unique in comparison with the other poems at that time. The article assumes the poet’s positive contribution to the modernization of Vietnamese literature.
