Solutions to create an English learning environment for non-major students at Quy Nhon University: Physical learning environmental perspective
Abstract
A good learning environment is significant in enhancing students’ English learning efficiency. Learning environment includes a variety of aspects, but physical environment is seen as a key factor because it has great influence on students’ psychosocial behavior as well as teaching-learning methods. This study aims to find out the current situation and propose possible solutions to create an effective English learning environment in terms of physical aspect for non-English majored students at Quy Nhon University. There were 388 non-English majored students and 8 teachers involved in the survey with 2 questionnaires. In-depth interviews were also conducted with a number of students and teachers. The results show that, in general, the physical environment is negatively assessed. To create a good physical environment, the university must invest in purchasing and repairing equipment such as projectors and sound speakers, and pay attention to selecting and distributing classrooms with adequate equipment for English classes. In addition, it is necessary to check all classrooms and upgrade the classrooms that do not meet the demands of area, lighting, and temperature as well as arrange the classrooms that are less affected by noise for English classes. Class sizes should be smaller, and there is a need of investing in flexible furniture in some classrooms used only for teaching English.
