Abstract

In the context of a pressing need to improve the quality of National Defense and Security Education (NDSE) at the university level amid limited equipment, this study conducts pilot-tests and evaluates the pedagogical effectiveness of an AK assault-rifle marksmanship training model within the NDSE 4 module, aligned with Circular No. 05/2020/TT-BGDĐT. The study was conducted at the Center for National Defense and Security Education, Quy Nhon University (April 2024 - June 2025), involving 600 students (356 males and 244 females) from cohorts 44 and 49, who were evenly allocated to experimental and control groups (n = 300 each), and included consultations with 12 instructors. The intervention combined active learning, part-task practice, and the use of five MBT-03 shooting simulators. Data were collected via surveys and pedagogical experiments and analyzed using SPSS; the scales measuring learning interest and domain knowledge demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.85 and 0.89). Results indicate that the experimental group improved markedly in both interest and skills: the mean shooting score reached 7.85 (SD = 1.12), 21.7% higher than the control group’s 6.45 (SD = 1.35), a statistically significant difference (t(598) = 12.34; p < .001). In conclusion, the proposed model is both effective and feasible under equipment constraints, contributing to enhanced quality of NDSE teaching at the university level and supporting the objective of building an all-people national defense.
